About the Awareness Centre

We are here for you

The Awareness Centre (TAC) was founded in 2005 by Michaela McCarthy, the Managing Director, and has developed into one of the leading providers of safe and confidential counselling and psychotherapy services to the local and wider community in London.

The Awareness Centre is a limited company and a member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). We have two Centres, one in Clapham SW4 and one in Tooting SW17.

TAC is a registered healthcare provider with more than 300 practitioners meeting the diverse mental health and wellbeing needs of our clients in London through face-to-face talking therapies within our low cost, NHS or private therapy services.

Our experienced counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists working in private practice are fully qualified, registered and insured. They offer multi-theoretical approaches and are able to work with a range of presenting issues, including, but not exclusive to: abuse, addiction, anger management, bereavement, children and adolescents, depression, eating disorders, LGBTQ, sexuality, sex and relationships, and trauma. We have the capacity for various specialisms and currently offer counselling in more than 30 languages. Some of our counsellors also offer online and telephone sessions.

The Awareness Centre has a team of over 300 therapists offering confidential counselling, psychotherapy and psychology from our centres in Clapham and Tooting in South London. If you’re taking the step to reach out for support, TAC can help you find the therapist that’s right for you.

Low cost service

Our NHS clients are individuals aged 18+ registered with GP surgeries in the boroughs of Lambeth, Wandsworth and Sutton. Our low cost service is for young people aged 13-17, as well as individuals and couples aged 18+ on a low income or in receipt of benefits. Our private clients include individuals, couples and families, children aged from 3 years, young people 13-17 years, and people 18+.

TAC accepts self-referrals and referrals from community learning difficulties teams for both children and adults, mental health teams, probation service teams, substance misuse teams, GPs, nurses, psychiatrists, and other professionals.

Partnerships

The Awareness Centre works with other commercial and charity organisations. It is contracted by the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust (SLaM) and South West London and St Georges Mental Health NHS Trust (SWLSTG) to work in partnership with Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) to deliver 6 or 12 free counselling sessions within GP surgeries in Lambeth, Wandsworth and Sutton.

Our philosophy

Our philosophy at The Awareness Centre is to offer a relaxing environment where clients and practitioners can co-create a therapeutic relationship. This space enables clients to explore issues, thoughts and meaning, to support their mental health and to develop self-awareness at their own pace. We also believe that one approach to therapy does not treat or teach all, so it is worth looking at our website, or speaking to a member of our team, to find the right path for you.

The Awareness Centre adheres to the BACP Ethical Framework, which therapists will talk through at the initial consultation with clients. All clients are given the opportunity to ask any questions, including any queries around when confidentiality may be breached if there is a risk to yourself or others present.
